Need some good advice on my "library".....

Postby Gina » Mon May 14, 2012 11:41 am

I quite literally have my own library in my home consisting of lots of inspirational books, TONS of books from teaching elementary in school and homeschooling, etc., etc., etc.

What are some ways that you all have found effective in shoveling through your books?

My criteria for keeping a book (and I kept far too many for far too long - getting rid of is a newish thing for me):

"What do I KNOW I want to read again?" and "What do I KNOW I want my kids to read?" If it's not going to get looked at again, why would I keep it? Again, this is a newish concept for me. :greengrin

I do reread as I get rid of - but I read very quickly, so I can do that and not get bogged down.

I joined paperback swap, though that doesn't really take the numbers down, does it? lol

I find it easier to get rid of books since the GED center started its shelf. (giving to a good cause)

I have a ton, and had about twice as much as I did. I ended up giving it all away and asking for donations for Lora Kesselhon (the books raised $1100!!). When I get ready to get rid of more stuff, if I don't think I can easily sell it (IOW, it's older), I will donate it all. I felt so good donating it.

I am not good at getting rid of books. In fact, I was just telling dh this evening that it would be so neat to have a house that had built-in bookshelves in every single wall. Can you imagine? :grinning :nine

If you want to make a list of titles to sell or give away (preferably here...yay!) and it seems too daunting to do all at once, how about taking five or ten minutes a day and adding them to your list. Keep your list on the fridge or something and then add more titles the next day but only for five or ten minutes.

I have boxes full too. Not sure what to do. J will not use most of them. My son-in-law's mother has been borrowing textbooks to home school her youngest son who is a yr. younger than J. Then my two married dd's with kids have asked for beginning readers. SO........ do I get rid of them??????
