Help with spices

Postby HeyThereDelilah » Fri Feb 24, 2012 10:38 pm

Since we are changing our eating habits, I purchased some spices today that I don't normally cook with. Well, I should say I purchased a spice that I'm unfamiliar with and it's coriander. I also purchased turmeric, cayenne pepper, and cumin, but I've used those before. Is there an easy resource that will tell me which spices complement each other? For example, I'm wondering if I can use both turmeric and coriander in the same dish. Do you use coriander often? There is a recipe in the book I'm reading that uses coriander, but I'm not one to use recipes often. I just cook adding a little bit of this and that...goes for spices, too. I don't want to totally ruin a dish, though. Just not very familiar with this coriander stuff. :P

You didn't ask but I learned this in a spice store (Penzeys), never sprinkle your seasoning over a hot pot. The moisture from your food will seep into your spice. You should sprinkle it into your hand and then put it into your food.

I found this: http://homecooking.about.com/od/cookingfaqs/f/faqcoriander.htm

I use cilantro in salsa. I tend to just use spices as they come up in recipes. I have started using a lot of cumin in my chili; I like it better than chili powder.

Here's a spice chart: http://homecooking.about.com/library/archive/blmisc2.htm It looks like coriander and cumin can be used together from what I see.

Hope this helps!

I have been intending to search for something - - someday.

Thanks guys for the links! I will look at them, as they open on my very slow computer, and try to learn a bit of something.

I also want to know what ones are considered SAVORY, SPICY, SWEET ....
