by Kimi Cunningham Grant. It's about a Japanese family during America's internment of the Japanese. It is a true story written by the granddaughter. It is a gentle story, not one of hatred or bitterness as you might image a story of unjust imprisonment might be. I learned a lot of history that was just glossed over in my school classrooms. And I'm sorry to say that I did not include in my homeschool. I also gained insight into the Japanese perspective ~ why they felt shamed.
Kimi's tells the story in both the past and the present, but it moves very smoothly.
What's really neat is that I know the author and her family! We have attended the same church for 20 some years. Kimi's mom taught my kids in Sunday school. Obaachan (Kimi's grandmother who was imprisoned in a camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming) now lives here, too. I have never met her, but I surely would like to now!
