Hannah has the mumps!

Postby MAC » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:50 pm

She has a big knot behind her ear and all of her lymph nodes are swollen, including the ones in her chest--making it impossible to swim (big meet today). She went to see the doc today and the woman commented, "If I didn't know better, because no one gets it because everyone is vaccinated for it, I'd say you have the mumps!" Hannah was telling me this later--DUH! She had her first MMR vax 10 days ago! I called it into public health, as they need to write it down as an adverse reaction. I remember getting the measles from my MMR, which I stupidly got in the middle of finals. No one warned me I might get the measles from it... Poor Hannah, she's miserable. No swimming tomorrow, either! She's in bed...

Well, just talked to the doc--supposedly, it's not. However, she's getting the chipmunk neck thing. The doc thinks the vax hammered her immune system and she has a virus. Ugh. She is not feeling well. The good thing is that if it is not, then Sarah and her friend can come on Monday. I was warning them away as Sarah is not vaxed for it--she was really ill from the one and only MMR she ever got, many years ago.

When I was growing up, most people got the mumps (including my sister--on one side). I never got them. Weird.

Hope she feels better!

I had the mumps the summer after my freshman year of college. I was soooo miserable -- and hungry because I couldn't chew food. By the time my younger siblings came down with it, it ocurred to my mom to get them baby food to eat. :rolleyes Interestingly, one of my younger sisters never got the mumps--even though our sister with whom she shared a room did. My uncle was childless because of having had mumps. But that complication shouldn't affect Hannah. ;) For what all those memories are worth. :2lol

Whatever it was, it settled in her joints. She spent two days barely able to walk (this is a girl that ran 2.5 years with no ligaments attached in her ankle---and broke records doing it) and not able to stand upright. Then it moved out of her other joints into her wrists. Her lumps seem to be going down and she's back to swimming. Whatever it was, it was weird!

Dh has an uncle who was unable to have more children after mumps, until 15 years later!

Yep--mumps in males is very bad. Interesting that he finally could have children!

Yeah, they had a little surprise, so had another one to keep that one company! They really did have two families--the two groups of two are not close at all.
