I need recommendations for dh.

Postby HeyThereDelilah » Thu Oct 27, 2011 9:30 am

Dh has decided to start reading instead of watching so much TV. :party He has already finished the first book he started, which was No Country For Old Men. He's now reading a book I recommended called The Oath by Frank Peretti. He's really enjoying it and reads it on his lunch break at work. When the kids are all quiet in bed at night, I read aloud to him (I LOVE reading out loud and he really enjoys this.) We are enjoying this time together. The other night, the TV was off and it was just he and I chatting til 12:30! :D

I am looking for recommendations of books that would appeal to him and don't have lots of junky stuff in them. No explicit language. Though his tolerance for foul language is higher than mine, he still doesn't want to read stuff that is full of explicit language. Also, no explicit s*xual or s*nsual stuff. Obviously, he's not looking for romance novels either. :P

I guess we are looking for good, clean, mystery or suspense. Thrillers are ok. He'd probably enjoy some good historical fiction, but I am not good at picking that stuff out. I was also thinking about Terri Blackstock, but I don't know anything about her. I believe people say she writes stuff about crazy, hypothetical medical situations, right? Are they clean books, though? Oh, maybe suspenseful, political novels would be good.

Any other suggestions?

How about some of the earlier Peretti books? I read them before I was a believer, and I know they got me really thinking about things.

Will he do any of the Left Behind books? I read the first one, and then part of the second, but there were just far too many for me.

There is a Christian author...Sigmund Somethingorother....let me go look---

Okay, here he is. http://www.christianbook.com/html/authors/5066.html Sigmund Bouwer. I didn't even know he wrote adult books until just now. I thought he only did kid books. Veronica loved him because he did sports-themed books (hockey).

The husband of a real-life friend of mine has written some detective-type books. His name is Joe Hilley. He was a lawyer and left it all to become a writer. You can get most of his books on www.half.com for 75ยข plus shipping (or check your libree). http://www.joehilley.com/joesbooks.html

My dh doesn't have a lot of time to read and rarely buys books, but these he read from the library and then bought his own copy:

Bill Bryson books (A Walk in the Woods, In a Sunburned Country). Non-fiction and humorous, but I've not read them personally. http://www.amazon.com/Sunburned-Country ... 166&sr=8-5

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer about the ill-fated climb on Mount Everest, also a true story.

River of Doubt, about Teddy Roosevelt's expedition to the Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/River-Doubt-Theod ... 433&sr=8-1

All are non-fiction.

The Patrick Bower files by Stephen James are mystery thrillers, a Christian author but he does describe some pretty intense crime scenes, http://www.amazon.com/Pawn-Patrick-Bowe ... t_ep_dpt_2

Agreed on the Peretti books. "This Present Darkness" and "Piercing the Darkness." There's also "The Prophet" I think. Maybe others.

I just read a sci-fi book by Bill Meyers (Myer? Myers?) called "Blood of Heaven." Kinda interesting. He's the guy that did "McGee and Me" videos and the Wally McDougal books, among other things. He's apparently got a bunch of Christian sci-fi stuff for adults.

Terri Blackstock has some interesting "thriller" type books; I can't remember how much "romance" is in them. There was a series about Light..."Last Light," "Night Light," "First Light" or something similar. I thought they were really interesting to read.

I highly recommend Ted Dekker's books, especially The Circle quadrilogy. The first is called "Black", then comes "Red", then "White" and "Green". They are excellent books. :)

I was also going to recommend Ted Dekker - Thr3e is really good...can't remember some of the other titles, but they are good! If you get Showdown, Saint or Sinner read them AFTER the Circle books so they make more sense (at least they did for me!).

Thanks all! I'll make a list of your suggestions. I've read the other Peretti novels...This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness, so I was gonna get those for him. I'll have to check out the other ones, too.
