Prairie Primer

Postby TamieJP » Wed Jan 12, 2011 8:05 pm

We started the Prairie Primer when my daughter was 11years old. She'll be 12 soon and we will be done with the PP soon.

I have enjoyed doing it with her and feel that the education is much broader than what a textbook could offer. I like the pace that it's set at too. Sometimes I wish that we'd get going on a tangent but we just usually don't.

I have my daughter do dictation from a few small paragraphs from the reading selection, add math & grammar. She reads freely.

I think I'll be ready to return to the Beyond Five in a Row curriculum when we are done with the PP. THEN - perhaps Switched on Schoolhouse.

We are doing a very brief use of the SOS at this point. So far, she does not like it at all!

We used PP when my daughter was in 3rd grade. She was capable of reading the books and I so fondly remember loving all but one or two of them that I wanted to share the stories with her.

She HATED the Little House books. What she did love were the add-in books that were listed in the PP guide to aid in the study of science or history. We ended up setting the series aside and using just the science and history portions of the guide.

Tamie, we are mixing PP and BYFIAR this year and next. Doing a BY book, then a PP. We just started Farmer Boy last week. :)

:grinning We will be returning to BYFIAR in a week or two. I think we will do Sarah Plain and Tall first. I do not remember what other books we've not done but I think this is a good fit for EG as she's still in love with the Prairie life.

EG has started reading the PP lesson guide herself. I am now her encourager instead of the teacher of the curriculum. I decided that since she decided to follow guide w/o so much help from me that I'd move her up a grade. We are now calling her 7th grade.

THEN, we came to the COURTING lessons and I decided I had to teach those. :B :silly
