rent or buy steam carpet cleaner?

Discuss...

I'll listen in :) we need to clean the carpets here before we leave AND most likely will need to clean carpets at wherever we end up on the other end of our move...

We own one - have had it for years. It has been handy to have it on hand for accidents :). Quick spot cleanings are much more convenient. We used to rent the Rug Doctor, but it is heavy and a hassle. Consumer Reports rated this one much better than the Rug Doctor or the other home machines:

It is probably too late, but mine is used OFTEN and shared and holding up well. I can't believe how much it is used and how good a job it does. I really like it. Mine is an OLD Hoover...$189 and it has cleaned MANY times, for us, for our older kids and their friends!

Probably far too late - just clicked on this forum! When we moved we hired a rug doctor for the day - it was around £20 plus the cleaning liquids. It gave us a much better clean than we could have got from a domestic cleaner. Mum has a VAX that we have used in the past and it is good, but nothing like the rug doctor - it is an industrial type one at a really good daily hire rate. So if you haven't bought one yet - consider that, if they are available near you.

I just did some research on this subject for myself. I came to the conclusion that I could buy one for under $250 that cleaned at least as well as one I could rent from a hardware or grocery store. Hiring a professional probably gets the carpets the cleanest but that option is very expensive. So, I bought one. I got the Bissel Deep Cleaner Pet. I got it at Best Buy where they matched the lowest price I could find online and threw in a bottle of shampoo. :) I have cleaned one really yucky room with it and I am really impressed. This weekend I plan on doing a couple more rooms. I'll let you know if I am disappointed. I don't think I will be.

Oh, I chose to buy because it's 50 bucks everytime I want to rent one. And it's more convenient to pull it out of the closet than to run into town and run back to return it.

my decision was to buy...but most likely we will borrow as our church has one we can borrow. Much better than shelling out money at this juncture (we have plenty of other expenses).

I'll probably buy one down the road, though :)

I am totally won over. My carpets and furniture haven't looked this clean or smelled this clean in a loooong time. :B :D
