Yes, he knows his facts. Also, this is really weird, but he can see the answers without explaining to me how he got them. He can't explain to me either. He says he knows the answer must be this because..then he'll start trying to explain it to me but he may as well be speaking Swahili because I'll have no idea WHAT he is talking about and he'll get frustrated because he can't explain it. But the answer will be right and I know he didn't cheat because he'll do it right in front of me.

However, that's not all the time. That's for certain things.

Another problem I'm having is (I know grade level shouldn't matter) but what if we do go way back and he never finishes any kind of higher math? What on earth would I put on his transcript for hs math?

He is not university bound. CC if anything. But still, won't I have to put something on his transcript?

Counted All the Answers I Got Wrong 101 is not an option. :P

You call it whatever you want, but I'd call it "basic math" for the old MUS books one and two and "pre algebra" for book three. In a traditional school he would simply be doing remedial math. There is no disgrace for going back. Really, there isn't.

So if he knows his facts you could probably start in the 2nd old MUS book. Just my really really humble opinion.

agreeing with making it super easy for awhile - that's one of the reasons I thought of Aleks - because if he DOES know a concept, it will move him along, but if he doesn't, it will just keep reteaching and practicing. and it's him and the computer - no mom involved.... :rolleyes And it starts at third grade. It's $20 a month - that may have been why you decided against it before.

Singapore math is a bare-bones math program that was highly recommended to a friend whose dd could do math,
but not retain it nor verbalize the answer as to why she got it right. It removes all the fluff, so that some students
can distinguish the tree from the forest. This evaluator told my friend to quit pushing so 'much' math onto her dd,
and instead give her the bare-bones in small doses. It worked well for this student.

I've always heard Singapore worked better for kids who were really good at math so I've stayed away from it. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I had my son do Consumer Math and Business Math. (math with numbers) He was able to complete those without lots of trouble. He managed to complete Algebra TT (in 2 years) but was never able to comprehend Geometry.

I'm having him do Key to Algebra. We just got it so he hasn't gotten very far in it. I have my own notebook and will do the same assignments I give him every day so I can understand it more if he needs help. :)

That's what we're doing and it's worked. Does she love Algebra? No. Will she be able to earn at least a "B" on a transcript for Algebra, yes. Will she be majoring in math at college, no. Will she even be at college, probably not. No matter, at least she's almost finished it. :thumbsup

PS: And she's gotten 300 times farther than Veronica did. Or more. Veronica only did one page of Key to Algebra 1 (out of ten booklets). I totally forgot she'd even tried that (she also tried Saxon, MUS, Cornerstone, Algebra Simplified, Lifepac). And she's almost made it through law school. Guess it wasn't as important as the world makes it out to be.

Can she determine what is or is not a "good sale" when deciding on purchases?
Can she manage her checkbook/debit card so as to avoid overdraft fees?
Can she keep her bills paid on time?
Can she maintain the appropriate records and then file her taxes?
Will she be able to manage a retirement account (when she eventually gets an income)?
