She found out a few days ago that she was admitted to JMU for the doctoral program in violin performance and pedagogy. However, she hadn't heard about $$. She got the teaching assistantship! And a large stipend! I am so pleased for her. ONE of these days, she needs to quit applying to only ONE school... She did that at Hillsdale (only she already knew she was admitted) and did that at CU and now to JMU. Wait, she'll never have to apply again!

Congratulations. I hope that everything works out with the money.

Oh, she has the money--the TA-ship covers the tuition and the stipend is to live on. She's set!

Congratulations! She's not quite like Vinnie, who applied to 17 grad programs? The only one he didn't get was, ironically, MIT's statistic program. (EDIT: He applied to so many because he was given the opportunity to apply for free.)

I had to look up JMU. James Madison? It looks gorgeous. I think living there would be wonderful, except for bugs. But the beauty of it might make me rethink the bug deal.

Well, it's the town that has her nervous. She's been spoiled with 3 years in Boulder--how do you get a prettier place than that? However, JMU is quite close to GREAT WV boating!

She knows she'd really have to make a commitment to not becoming isolated--great orchestras are a long ways away--lots of traveling. The other students don't seem to take hearing big time orchestras that seriously.

Well, honestly, having lived in a very green area for nearly 12 years (as opposed to the Sierra Nevadas), I think it will be beautiful. Boulder is pretty--but it's basically dry like other mountainous areas of Colorado. There are trees and wonderful forests, but the underbrush is dry. In Virginia, she'll see greeeeeen everywhere. That was the biggest surprise to us when we left the mountains (including the Rockies).

EDIT: It's been three years since she graduated???

Congratulations to her!

I have a friend in Virginia, and I always see pictures on her facebook page of the beautiful rolling green hills. Ahh, I could live there! I bet Sarah will love it.

It's been four years--graduated from Hillsdale, worked at Shar Music for a year, then 2 years of the Master's and then this year working in Denver and Boulder. What's hard for me to fathom is that it's been almost a year since Bekah graduated and our Scout Master pointed out last night that Tim just has 2.5 years of Scouts left!!!

So he's a really tall second grader?

She's going to VA! I'm so pleased. She was concerned about not seeing one prof enough and not having the chamber music, so she emailed the prof and he called her. Her concerns have been allayed and she's going. I think this will really help her to move on...

that is so cool! Congratulations! (but aren't you worried that your unsocialized youngster might not make it in the big bad world?

Yeah, about as much as I worry about my unsocialized ensign--who does her cross-country flight this weekend! And if Hannah does any more socialization, we'll never get anything done... Off to go swimming with the other unsocialized hs kids.

JMU as in James Madison? That's where my ds1 went. We are only 3-+ hours away. It's a beautiful area. The daughter of a friend was also excepted there.

Not really. Colorado is actually quite green during the summer months. (I have to admit, it's still kind of a shock to look out and see GREEN GRASS in the summer! And the wildflowers are awesome!) It is very brown in winter though--just starting to green up now.

However, having been back east, I will admit that it isn't as green as it is in, say, Virginia. (Have never been to WV.) I hope Sarah likes it there. MAC, did she like Ohio?

She was in MI and hated it. She always said she felt like a mushroom--living under gray skies. She used to get off the plane at DIA and look toward the mountains and begin to cry. If she can get up to creeks in WV,that would help. And Donna, yes, James Madison.

One of the things she really liked about the school was the practice room setup--they have swipe cards for individual rooms, plus you can sign up for specific rooms for specific times for the entire semester. As a doctoral student, she'd get first dibbies. And since the rooms have individual cards, you can lock the room behind you and leave your instrument for a few minutes to take a break. The Forbes Center has wonderful recital halls--all big pluses.
