I know I post this stuff a lot, but I'm pretty proud of this kid.

He has recognized three or four words for the longest time, but now he's just taken off! He knows around forty words. They're mostly nouns. I'm about to add words like "is" and some verbs, so I can write some books for him.

If I could only get him interested in writing . . . even scribbling! He just throws the crayon across the room. He can form two letters with Handwriting Without Tears wood pieces, though (capital P and B). I'll keep teaching him new ones so, when he's ready to write, he'll have the general idea.

That is FANTASTIC--and I never get tired of seeing his videos (did you post one recently that I missed? It seems like a long time since I've seen one). Very, very impressive. Was I really the first one to see it? It says "0" views.

As for his writing, I think that will come with more maturity. I mean, Vinnie couldn't stand writing, drawing, scribbling, etc. He still can't physically write very well (his printing and handwriting is not good), but apparently he can write whatever MIT needs.

Yes, he apparently can! LOL! I'm proud of Vinnie, too!

This is the last reading vid I posted. I think I only put it on Facebook. Faith was helping him.

Was Faith coaching him, or was he getting the words on his own? I had no idea he was reading that much and that well!

No, she wasn't coaching him at all. He knows lots of food words!

He reads strictly by sight . . . no phonics at all. I just flash the words at him six or eight times a day, at one second per word. I say the word while flashing it. When he starts recognizing a word, he blurts it out before I have a chance to say it. It's a technique that's been used successfully with a lot of kids with Down syndrome, because phonics is usually a challenge for them. I must admit, it seemed a weird way to teach reading at first, and I questioned whether it would really work, but it does . . . if you're patient!

Hey. I saw the video after Vicki did and it still said "0" views. Then I subscribed to you videos and looked at it again and it still said "0"

Yeah Joshie.
We did that with J for a while. Until he refused to do flashcards. He was about 8 when he refused. I can get him to do them maybe once a week. It might be because he started reading books. Now we just read stories over and over, new words are learned by reading. Vicki found me a large volume "Di.ck and Jane" We have read it over and over this school year. He has also read most of "Go Dog Go". It is hard finding books for him. I have made him some, but he tends to like the real books best. He is now 11 so that may be part of it.

Sight reading has worked well for many kids (including me, when I was a child!). I figured out phonics later. I'm not saying James or Joshie will figure out phonics, but who cares as long as they can read important things!! I'm just so impressed at both J's (one I know in person!) and am thrilled that you're sharing your successes with us!

I will never tire of the videos of Joshie esp when they are so short.

I am amazed at how hard you work with Joshie. He was born into the right family!!

Some days I think James understands sounding out, and the next no way. He does know all his letter sounds and we can work through a word and eventually he usually can say it.
