Old-fashioned clothes pins

I've started using them for my line-drying and I love them! To me, they are easier to put up and take down than regular clothes pins. I'm not sure why we ever went to spring-loaded ones (which sometimes come apart) except that the normal ones are easier for very, very thick items. Otherwise, these old ones are good for thick towels, normal blankets, clothes, etc.

I bought 50 from someone on ebay and will be looking for more of them when I can find 'em. He also sent me some really, really old flat ones which are very neat. When I used them today I had to wonder about where they'd been used--their history--maybe some are older than I am!

Here's a really interesting site (yes, I know, I'm interested in the weirdest things). http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/it/2006/2/2006_2_38.shtml

According to the site, the newer spring-loaded clothes pin was better because, “This instrument unlike the common wooden clothes pin in common use does not strain the clothes or injure them when it is used.” Furthermore, he triumphantly concluded, “it cannot be detached from the clothes by the wind as is the case with the common pin and which is a serious evil to washerwomen.” I've found that these are much better in the wind than the spring-loaded ones. Maybe the newer made-in-China clothespins are weaker because they snap apart and blow off the line much easier than the old peg ones.

I think someone put a lot of the wrong detergent in it--but I don't know that for sure. The drain is plugged, and thankfully I have the warranty still on it. They aren't coming until Tuesday (this happened last Tuesday). Clothes are trapped in it with water ready to pour out. I still love my washing machine and would never have a top-loader again if I can avoid it. This is very unusual.

I'm praising God because it could be much worse. Thank You, God, for all you do!

One more day & the mowing will be caught up

The lawn grew to above knee height waiting for me to get able to mow... or help EG mow. Mark &/or MQ was starting the mower. EG was doing her best at mowing with me helping push over rough spots and encouraging her to not leave 'mohawks'.

The time has progressed with us getting a portion of the lawn done at each attempt. Today, I did most of the mowing (yes my arm hurts but not terribly... until I go to bed). I was able to start the mower myself today with EG holding it still as I ripped the cord with my left arm.

Now, we just have the rest of the driveway (no use makes for the grass to grow right up through the gravel) & the first area we mowed to finish the primary yard. We have two other yards that will have to be mowed soon. (I actually had forgotten about those when I started this thread).

MQ breaks out in hives when she is even in the yard soon after it's been mowed (or even if it's not been recently mowed). She cannot mow. EG is too small to push the mower by herself. And- of course you know about Mark. Actually, he did try today. He mowed about 10min and came in in tears. He could do no more.

I have asked NTL (Nathaneal) to come mow but he does have a newborn son and his own little family. He's not been here to mow since the one time he did it before my surgery after the rider died.

Our lawn is not giant as some are but it's about 3/4 an acre I think. That includes the footprint of the house, garage and out-building. So, it's not 3/4 acre to mow, that's 100% of the property space.
